I’m a freelance writer currently based in Los Angeles. I’ve lived in China and Brazil, and often write from abroad about contemporary art and culture. From 2017 to 2018 I was a contributing writer at W, writing about people and places in L.A. My writing often appears in/at the websites of magazines such as Artforum, V magazine, Wallpaper*, and Condé Nast Traveler. I’ve also written for the Guardian, Vogue, GQ, the New York Times, WSJ. Magazine, Poetry Foundation, and Tin House. Occasionally I take on editing projects for magazines, galleries, and the like; more recently, I’ve been writing for T.V. and film.
Before freelancing full-time, I worked as an editor at Aperture Foundation and at Artnews. I’ve been awarded a fellowship from the Sacatar Institute in Salvador, Brazil, and prizes from the American Academy of Poets. I graduated from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism.
If you’d like me to write for you, get in touch via my contact page. Oh, and I also go by Ali.
