I’m a freelance writer currently based in Los Angeles. I’ve lived and studied in Turkey, China, and Brazil, and often write from abroad about contemporary art and culture. For W, I often write about people and places in L.A. My other writing appears in/at the websites of magazines such as Artforum, V magazine, Wallpaper*, and Condé Nast Traveler. I’ve also written for the Guardian, Vogue, the New York Times, WSJ. Magazine, Poetry Foundation, and Tin House. Occasionally I take on freelance editing projects for magazines, galleries, startups, and the like.
Before freelancing full-time, I worked as an editor at Aperture Foundation and before that at Artnews. I’ve been awarded a fellowship from the Sacatar Institute in Salvador, Brazil, and prizes from the American Academy of Poets. I graduated from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism with degrees in magazine journalism and in English with honors.
If you’d like me to write for you, get in touch via my contact page. Oh, and I also go by Ali.
